Food: what’s your flavour!

Odyssea Salad: Odyssea City Beach

Is it a little sweet, salty, spicy or somewhere in between?

There is no doubt that food plays a major part in all aspects of life, from socialising to celebrating major milestones and family traditions. It is the heart of almost every occasion and I know, for my big Anglo Burmese family, it is one of the commonalities that bring us together. Our Parents, Aunts, and Uncles reminisce about how dishes were cooked back in the day and who made the best dish. We embrace the opportunity to make more memories and learn different ways of cooking, learn about our family histories while keeping our own family and food traditions and culture alive.

Cured Line-caught Snapper: Wildflower

There are 3 tastes needed to make your dish balanced and flavoursome

  • A little sweetness
  • A dash of sourness
  • And some saltiness

In Burmese cooking or at least in the way my Dad likes to cook, you can also add a decent amount of heat.

When cooking or baking there’s always a fine balance between something turning out exactly the way you expected and a result that was best not road-tested on the relatives.

Just like relationships, it’s all a fine balance.

Cooking – like relationships, needs time, patience and communication.

It’s the perfect way to learn from each other and create something delicious!

If you really think about what makes your relationships so special and your intimate moments so meaningful, you might find it’s the time, effort, and understanding that you develop over time to build strong bonds and connections. I have found over the years that sharing meals and cooking with others create lasting experiences and opportunities to engage in meaningful conversation. It can be fun (and sometimes a little stressful, but mostly fun) to create something together and enjoy the finished product.

Next time you’re planning a meal or wanting to do something special together as a family or with someone special, try something in the kitchen. It doesn’t have to be difficult or something that’s fit for Masterchef, use it as a way to build connection, open conversation, and create memorable moments together. Keep scrolling these pages, you’ll find some easy recipes to follow that are easy, fun to make, and oh so delicious!
